Class DescriptionCourse Description: An overview of principles of indexing of text and image documents, including journals, newspapers, and back-of-the-book indexing. This course will address issues of information retrieval and will be of interest to practicing librarians and other information professionals who would like to improve their indexing skills, and to those who are considering freelance indexing. Course Outcomes: By the end of the course, students should have acquired an understanding of the following: The benefits of knowledge representation Two types of indexing practice: traditional and faceted Methods of evaluating indexing The profession of indexing Automated indexing Special circumstances encountered in representing documents on the Internet
